How To Have Faith In God:

1. Spend Time Praying To God

The first way to grow in faith is simply praying to God. There are many views on how to pray to God, but it shouldn’t be overly complicated.

To pray, I like to start with thanking God for all of my blessings. After being thankful, I like to move onto examining my conscience and meditating. The simple act of sitting in silence with God is very special. I’m truly able to feel His presence when I sit silence.

Feeling the presence of God is the first step in having faith in God. If you are struggling with your faith or you want to have a better faith life, then feeling His presence is a must and will help you follow Him.

2. Read The Bible

Something I struggled with in my faith was the ability to listen to God. I could easily talk to God, but listening was difficult. The answer to this issue is very simply, read the bible! God’s word is in the bible and He is directly speaking to us in the Bible.

If you’re anything like me and don’t know where to start with the bible, then I recommend listening to Father Mike’s Bible In A Year podcast. The podcast is exactly as it sounds, it goes through the entire bible in a year.

This way you can listen to the entire bible instead of reading it to yourself every night, and it holds you accountable. Besides reading through the bible, Father Mike explains the significance of the readings and relates it our lives in the 21st century. I highly recommend bible in a year as it truly has changed my life!

3. Go To Church Every Sunday

There’s a reason why one of the ten commandments is to keep the Sabbath holy. Having Sunday be the day of rest and going to church every Sunday will transform your life.

In the Catholic church, it’s actually a sin to not to church on Sundays, since it’s apart of the 10 commandments. Whether you’re Catholic, or another denomination of Christianity, going to church every Sunday and connecting with your community is extremely important.

Every Sunday when I go to mass, I feel a sense of renewal. I feel refreshed and ready to take on the week with Jesus on my side.

4. Ask For Forgiveness

To grow in your faith with God, it’s a good tactic to examine your conscience and ask God for forgiveness in areas of your life you could have done better. God created us, and if we don’t do what he desires of us to do then we need to ask for forgiveness.

How do we know what he wants us to do? The bible holds the answer. The bible speaks of the 10 commandments and has various of mentions of how to act as a child of God in the bible.

If you are Catholic, then I would recommend doing Reconciliation, also known as the Sacrament Of Penance, also knows as Confession. As a Catholic myself, every time I go to confession I feel so clean, renewed, and honestly amazing. The feeling after confession is unmatched, but that is not the reason you should go to confession.

You should go to confession and ask for forgiveness because you are truly apologetic of your sins and desire to do better in the future. The feeling of feeling great after confession is just an attribute of the true meaning of confessing your sins and asking for forgiveness.

5. Volunteer

Another way how to have faith in God is volunteering. Galatians 5:13 states “But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” This quote makes it clear that we are called to serve others. As Christians, we are called to give back in whichever way we can.

If your vocation in life calls you to be extremely busy, perhaps consider donating instead of volunteering. Nevertheless, Jesus wants us to volunteer and help people out of the love of our hearts. A good way to decide what volunteer route to take, is to consider what you are passionate about.

For example, my sister LOVES horses and horse back riding, therefore she’s interested in volunteering at a therapeutic horse back riding center. My other sister has a love for robotics and she loves volunteering as a mentor for young girls in STEM. As for me, I love singing, so I volunteer to sing at my church every Sunday. If you pick something you’re interested in, you will be sure to love it.

6. Join A Bible Study

In college, I joined my first ever bible study. Spoiler alert: I LOVED IT! It took me a while to find a bible study where I felt comfortable, but once I found good people to connect with, it was amazing.

Freshmen year I experimented with a few different bible studies, and even attended some non denominational Christian bible studies. They was only one that I connected with the time of the study didn’t align with my schedule, so I went through my freshmen year without a study. Sophomore year, I found a bible study with a group of girls that I adored. They were all amazing and I learned so much about God and the faith.

Joining a bible study enhances your personal growth in your faith. If you struggle with having faith in God or just want to deepen your faith, then this is a fantastic way to do so. You can express your concerns and thoughts to your peers and in return, they will give you new point of views that you might never have even thought of.

Now, I am apart of a rosary group that meets every month and I absolutely love it! Instead of doing the “normal rosary” we read scripture associated with each decade and then discuss our thoughts at the end. If you are interested in this type of rosary, you can find it at Daily Rosary Meditations | Catholic Prayers by Dr. Mike Scherschligt on Spotify or another podcast app.

7. Retreats And Conferences

Retreats and conference are actually life-changing. My freshmen year of college, I decided to go to a Catholic college conference, and the outcome was insane. I met some of my best friends today and my faith was strengthened so much. Something about being surrounded by so many like-minded people can really work wonders in your faith journey.

There are so many different type of retreats and conferences. There are conferences, like the one I went to, where you learn and meet people regarding your faith. Oppositely, there are retreats that are a full body experience.

Retreats can vary from silent retreats to mountain retreats to beach retreats and more. Both are super beneficial and will bring your faith in God to the next level.

8. Write 5 Things You’re Grateful For Today

how to have faith in God completely

In one of my bible studies, a girl said how every night she writes 5 things that she’s grateful for before she goes to bed. This is a wonderful practice to do when recognizing all of the amazing blessings you have that God has given you. Ever since the girl announced her tactics, I began writing 5 things I’m grateful for every single night before sleep.

Many times I forgot a lot of the good things playing out in my life. At night when I reflect on all of the things I am thankful for during the day, sometimes it takes me a while to recall the days events. Reflecting doesn’t only make me grateful for the day, but it allows me to examine my conscious and see what can improve for the future.

9. Worship Music

how do we get faith

Worship music has completely transformed my faith life. As a Catholic, our views on worship music can be warped because we believe that true worship is by celebrated the Eucharist at mass. However, singing songs to praise God is VERY transformational, as it has personally changed my life.

In college, I attended a Catholic conference where we celebrated adoration with worship music. If you have never done this, I recommend that you do because I was in tears!! The music with the Eucharist in front of us was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced, and I couldn’t help but be emotional.

If you are trying to learn how to have faith in God, then listen to some worship music in beautiful scenery such as nature, adoration, or a church. Having all of your senses experience the goodness of God will help you in your journey of faith.

10. Have Quality Friends

the power of trusting God

The last way how to have faith in God is having quality friends that will help you on your journey. Some of my best friends are amazing Catholic Christians who love Jesus above all else. It’s truly amazing being able to talk about life with each other knowing we all believe in the same values. With that being said, I have plenty of friends who are not Catholic, however it’s important to keep your Christian friends close.

If you have friends who share your faith, then you push each other in your faith. For example, last year during Ash Wednesday, I struggled with fasting. My roommate was a devout Catholic and she was motivating me to get through it. Together, we were able to fast on Ash Wednesday and abstain from our bodily desires. No matter your religious affiliation, having friends with your shared values will help you to motivate and learn more about your beautiful faith.
